"I'm sorry." Casey hates the sound of those words, the winged whine of them.

Zeke frowns, his mouth curling around a bitter taste, "What are you sorry for, Case?"

Casey looks at Zeke, standing, his hips pressed back against the workbench. Arms crossed against his chest. His face guarded, his eyes open. Casey looks at Zeke and lies.

"I don't know."

"Yeah," says Zeke and turns around to continue fiddling with the aspirator.

Casey watches the tense motions under the layers and opens his mouth. There are words, but they belong to someone else. Someone far away, someone who doesn't have knucklebones spanning the distance between the silence and the words.

Sometimes Casey says, "I'm pathetic. I'm weak."

Sometimes Casey says, "I'm afraid. I'm afraid you'll find out and put me away. You'll hurt me. You'll hate me."

Sometimes Casey says, "You shouldn't have to deal with my shit."

Sometimes Casey says, "I want to die."

Sometimes Casey says, "Don't touch me. I'm filthy."

Sometimes Casey says, "Once I was pure. But I can't remember when."

Sometimes Casey says, "I love you."

Sometimes Casey says, "Don't make me say it."

Sometimes Casey says, "Make it stop."

Sometimes Casey says, "I trust you. Hurt me."

Sometimes Casey says, "I want to know how it feels when I'm not afraid."

Sometimes Casey says, "Tell me it's okay."

But Zeke doesn't hear these things. Because all Casey ever says is, "I'm sorry."

End.
