Too early. The baby isn’t breathing. He’s too small and too early. It’s moments like these when Clara is sure she can see the future, can hear the song played out in the static tone of the monitor. The doctor won’t quit, won’t give up on a thing so small and Clara knows the baby won’t give up, either. He’ll live. But he’ll need help. She’s sure she’ll know what to do. When, is the only question.
The baby grows and doubles in size. He’s doing well, but Clara thinks he’ll always be a little small, a little frail as she holds him in her arms. He looks up at her with focused eyes and she rocks him, telling him it’ll be okay. She’ll make sure of it.
A few nights later, opportunity enters with chaos. A family of wealth and name, an emergency cesarean and a mother who’s hemorrhaging. The baby is a boy. Immediately, Clara knows. She wheels him to the nursery and slips the band off his ankle. She walks to the baby with starlit eyes and trades one future for another, “Your name is Bruce. And you will be loved.”
