The Fall.
A rush of angry wings and Bruce learned the sound of fury.
(No one thought they’d be rabid.)
The Crash.
A lightning voice, in the darkness a wave of thunder, taught Bruce the scent of red.
(Hot and sticky on his hands.)
The Shame.
He spat out water from the puddle Falcone’s men had thrown him in and learned the taste of futility.
(There’s a lot you can’t see, kid.)
The Offer.
A large man with a voice like Autumn proposed to teach him new ways to see, to learn the feel of hope fulfilled.
(A whole world at your fingertips, Bruce.)
The Warning.
Alfred could see and cautioned Bruce about where Ducard was leading him, the surety of the Abyss.
(Master Wayne, it’s high time you stopped feeling sorry for yourself.)
The Acceptance.
Bruce didn’t realize until he reached out a hand and felt Alfred’s shoes two feet from the floor.
(There is always a sacrifice.)
The Reckoning.
All went according to plan, except for the last.
A final touch to Ducard’s face and Bruce flew away.
(Always.)
The Rise.
A mountain retreat and robes heavy upon his shoulders.
Bruce’s army surrounded him, silent, a living mass of unpaved future at his command.
(The better to see you with.)
End.
